Macron Rejects Interior Minister’s Resignation Despite Acknowledgment of “Security Failures”

Al-Taj News – French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, despite his acknowledgment of failures in anticipation and intelligence gathering, in the wake of acts of violence that accompanied protests over the weekend, the Élysée Palace announced on Monday.

The Élysée Palace explained that the interior minister submitted his resignation to the president on Sunday, but Macron rejected it, justifying his decision by the need for continuity in the leadership of security forces under the current circumstances.

The presidency added that Macron tasked Nuñez with taking the necessary measures to transparently uncover the failures in anticipation and intelligence gathering that led to the outbreak of violence.

A number of opposition representatives, particularly from the far right, had called for Nuñez’s resignation on Sunday. He has held his position for only one year.

Macron also asked the interior minister to establish new operational methods for internal security forces on the ground as soon as possible to confront vandals, with the aim of putting an end to the setting up of barricades and acts of looting.
